Monthly Celebrations
April showers brought May flowers and also helped lead us to these monthly events in May:

  • National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month
  • Family Wellness Month
  • Creative Beginnings Month
  • Older Americans Month
  • National Bike Month
  • Women’s Health Care Month
  • No Pants Day (May 2)
  • National Volunteer Week
    (April 27-May 3)

Un“bee”lievable Treat
Honey is the only food that never spoils. There’s no need to refrigerate it. Honey can be stored unopened indefinitely at room temperature in a dry cupboard. More interesting honey facts: Honey is 25 percent sweeter than table sugar, and it can have different flavors and colors depending on the location and kind of flowers the bees visit. Honey is almost un“bee”lievable!

A Bubba Gump Favorite
Shrimp lovers unite May 2-4 during the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival in Fernandina Beach, Fla. Located on Amelia Island, Fla., the festival commemorates the area’s role as the birthplace of the modern shrimping industry. The multi-event festival includes a juried fine arts and crafts show, entertainment, antiques, pirates, a children’s fun zone and food.

For Lemonade Days, Make a Stand
Alex Scott was a young cancer patient determined to help other children like herself. So, for four years, despite deteriorating health, she set up a lemonade stand in her front yard to raise money for children’s cancer research. In her memory, children, schools, businesses and organizations across the country will do the same during National Lemonade Days, June 6-8. You can host your own stand or fundraiser in June or at any time of the year. For details or to find a stand near you, visit www.alexslemonade.org.

Better Biker Riding
Want to hit the road and feel the wind in your hair and the bugs in your teeth? Before you do, learn some safe motorcycle riding practices during May’s Motorcycle Safety Month. State and local motorcycle safety programs help riders continue to improve their skills from beginners’ to advanced riding courses.

Fitness Tip for May
With a few simple changes to your workday, you can be on your way to a “fitter” schedule. Try switching out your office chair with an exercise ball. Your back, legs and ab muscles will be working out all day. Another tip: Instead of e-mailing a colleague, walk the message down the hall. Lastly, opt for a walk-and-talk meeting rather than a lunch meeting at your desk.
